Mid-century inspired pattern

Unusual Wallpaper Swatch

I specialise in creating wallpaper and other patterns that are inspired by the best of UK mid-century design, especially those that enhance the look of the space in which they are used.

This design has a very open look and is based on some of the designs that appeared early in the 1950s before patterns got to the complexity associated with the 1960s and onwards. The design is a simple one and yet it has a deceptively complex look because of the interplay between the two separate patterns of which it is composed.

It is shown here on the complete wall of a relatively large room in either a house or an apartment. The effect that I am trying to create is one of size and of leading the eye slowly along the wall towards the window (or door) at the end. The room itself has natural floor boarding and brick together with metal for the windows and I was also trying to create a pattern which would go well with these natural elements. I decided to use green as the main colour since this is a colour which I do not ordinarily use and I thought that it would help to make the room look more open.

As ever, you can also see larger versions of this and my other work on my Flickr page which is here.
