This room is the mid-century bedroom set that I have used many times in the past but this time I have given it a much softer, much easier look.

The wallpaper is a simple single motif at quite a large scale in order to show the dimensions of the wall, while the adjoining wall is in a much darker, much more dramatic colour. I have also added a little colour to the curtains in order to make them more noticeable so that they play a greater part within the room.

The effect that I was aiming for was to produce a restful, pleasant bedroom environment but one that contained just a little drama to prevent it being dull and to provide a colour for accessories within the room.

1950s Style Swatch

Some of the wallpaper designs in the 1950s was inspirational and really took design to new and very different places.

This pattern uses simple circular motifs that are connected map-like one to another by a subtle line that is, in fact, composed of stars. The connections are quite faint and give the design a light, ethereal look that perfectly creates the right atmosphere for a living and dining room.

The design is shown here in West Avenue, the house that was used for the 1966 project and which now doubles as a set for fabric and wall coverings. The light colours in the room and the simple design of the curtains create a cosy and warm feeling that makes you want to walk into the room and sit down.

Mid-century Flavoured Cushions

Mid-century cushions, as cushions today, were sometimes quite fancy and sometimes, especially as the decades wore on, quite simple designs.

This pattern uses mid-century inspired motifs on a background of either chocolate or magnolia. Both these colours are from the British Standard colour set in use at the time and so both look very much as though they come from that period.

This is currently work in progress as I want to see what I think of the pattern in a day or so and perhaps then I will offer them for sale.

Modern Apartment Wallpaper

Just to show its versatility, here is a classic midcentury design, Chocolate Dereham from Spoonflower, used as a stylish wall covering for a modern apartment.

The apartment is the new set that I am developing which now has more of a lived in look than it did before and is shaping up well to be a fine set to showcase fabric and wallpaper. This camera angle shows more of the wall and less of the curtains.

Although this design is very mid-century, you can instantly see that it still looks more than good when used as wallpaper.

I like making unusual designs and, in fact, unusual designs – or maybe it’s better to say less usual ones – were a mainstay of midcentury patterns in the UK.

So here I have created some very normal flowers made to resemble the type of flowers that were being produced in the 1960s but I have left out the fill. Pairing these in various mid-century hues with an unusual background has produced a very stylish and interesting fabric pattern which is shown here as a swatch and also as curtains in the dining room.

Mid-century modern art movements exerted a certain influence on the patterns and designs of the middle years of the 20th century as can often be seen.

This design uses the blocks of modern art along with a bold border to produce a pleasant ‘all over’ effect that looks so good when used in a modern setting. In truth that was probably the original intention and so here I have used it in the very conservative dining room of a typical modern house or apartment.

The colouring is designed to conform yet to be bright and restful however this design does lend itself to more contrasty patterns as you will see in the next post. However for this design I wanted to create something that looks nice and peaceful and which would have a majority appeal. Before you ask – yes, I would have that in my apartment!

A New Set

A New Set

This wallpaper is called Framlingham Buttermilk and it is currently on sale in my Spoonflower store having been created as a fabric, wallpaper and wrapping paper.

However, the point of this post is to show you the work being done to create a new set. Yes, I know, I have been using the same sets for some time now and one thing I wanted to do was to create some new and perhaps more modern sets to show off the patterns that I make.

This is a typical apartment style set although it could equally be a room in a house. I have tried to curb my enthusiasm for 3D detail and create just a simple room with simple furnishings that just allow me to show – from this camera angle – the walls. A second camera, which you will see soon, shows more of the curtains to show off fabric designs.

OK, so a simple room, nothing fancy, made with Cinema 4D and a sofa and swivel chair along with a nice lamp for interest, all designed, like all my sets, to render quickly in around 4 minutes. Yes, it needs tweaking but I can’t do that until I have begun to post, or at least produce, some workable images to you will hopefully see it get better over the next month or so.
